2 Beers

Margaret River Brewhouse – Brown. A Brown Ale, 5%ABV, 375ml can. Everything I have had from them has been great. Their core range are just straight up standards done really well, and so have been the few one-off’s. I have not seen this one for sale before and again its a well done standard. A brown ale, nice roasty dark malts, a little crystal sweetness, slightly bready, really worth letting it warm a bit. The smell is quite bold but the flavours are nice and moderate. Light carbonation and good body for the style, nice colour and clarity, good head on pouring.

Nomad Brewing – Brookie, Dark Ale. 4.5%ABV, 330ml can. Ive only ever had limited release and colabs from these guys, so this is the first core range beer from them. Cocoa/chocolate smell and some sweetness. Bold possibly Black malt(?) , some coffee beans, “roastyness” and the light sourness that comes from dark malt bitterness, a slight hop bitterness lingers. For all its initial punch its still quite refreshing. Not bad.

How does this hold up?

Original version from 2015 pictured HERE

I remember the original having a just a bit of heat, crystal malt sweetness, some “Lamington” in the coconut and that cocoa nib cocoa taste. In 2021 The heat is more prevalent, it seems more biscuity, not getting the coconut but that can be expected unless its fresh. More black malt than cocoa or coffee. Not as much body as I would like, and slightly oxidized maybe though its in a can? Its still a nice sip.

Bright Tank Farmhouse?

Bright Tank Brewing Co website

Local brewery made a Farmhouse ale? …it tastes pretty legit.

Bright Tank – Le’Myrtle Farmhouse ale, 7.5%ABV 375ml can.
This actually tastes farmhouse, this seems def made with bugs, which is really fucking cool. Wish there was more info on how this was made. It has Lemon Myrtle I guess, also says it has Citra hops. The hopping for the end result is “balanced” enough at least. It definitely has a lemony taste, but the yeast/bugs is the big thing here as far as character, and as above, not enough info on that. Has a slight viscosity, maybe thats a brett/pedio thing? This is good, could go a little lower on the malt bill and lower on the ABV, bigger on the myrtle and create some breathing room for the yeast/bugs. Its good tho, and seriously happy a local is doing the farmhouse.

Rodenbach, a new old beer.

Rodenbach – Fruitage, Fruit ale, 3.9% 250ml can.

Still a combination of aged and young ale, and like the Alexander version this has cherries added. Far less sour than any of their other beers, I’d hesitate to call it a sour at all, this is lighter, more fruity (cherry obviously) but still has the elements of the Original and Grand Cru such as the oakyness and even wine notes. Nice.

Some More German Beers (Late-Toberfest 2)

Hofbrau – Oktoberfestbier
Hacker Pschorr – Kellerbier Naturtrub
Weltenburger Kloster – Plis

Weltenburger Kloster – Pils, 4.9%, 500ml bottle.
Klosterbrauerei Weltenburg, this is a German Pilsner, the smell is sweet and kind of wheat-beer-ish, lager yeast smells. Its very clear, light golden-straw in colour with a big head on pouring. This is quite bitter, and almost spicy, could be the yeast. Apart from that it is very easy drinking. Good, not great.

Hacker Pschorr – Kellerbier Naturtrub, 5.5%, 500ml bottle.
A German Lager/Kellerbier/Zwickelbier, an unfiltered beer and it shows. Nice golden amber colour, quite cloudy, a nice head. Aroma is biscuit malts and lager yeast. Taste is very nice very biscuity malt, a mild bitterness balancing out a very mild sweetness. Well balanced, the malt character is very nice.

Hofbrau – Oktoberfestbier, 6.3%, 500ml bottle.
Hofbräuhaus München. A Germen Lager/Marzen/Oktoberfestbier. Golden amber, very clear, nice head with good lacing. The smell is very lager yeast, not very funky though. Taste is bready and lightly sweet malts, theres a nice lager yeast character balanced with the mild hop bitterness, slightly spicy. Very good.

Some German Beers (Late-ToberFest)

Spaten – Oktoberfest , Lager/Marzen
Augustiner-Brau – Edelstoff, Lager/Dortmunder Export
Paulaner – Oktoberfest Bier, Lager/Marzen/Oktoberfest

Spaten – Oktoberfest, 5.9%, 500ml bottle.
Spaten-Franziskaner-Bräu is the brewery. Its a Lager-Marzen-Oktoberfst beer. Its a nice golden lager colour, a nice malty and lager yeast smell, nice head too. Nice back of the tongue bitterness, lager yeast characters are prominent, some mild malt characters, a sweet malt balanced with the bitter hops, some very slight toasty malt flavors in there as well, nothing is overbearing, its all well balanced.

Augustiner – Edelstoff, 5.7%, 500ml bottle.
Augustiner-Bräu. A Lager – European / Dortmunder Export. Lovely head, big lasting, good lager yeast smell, kind of minerally. Taste is light malt in there its noticeable, but its so mild, there’s hops and a nice bitterness but it doesn’t linger, This i have had before, and it is just so clean and crisp and drinkable. The hops and malt are just so balanced and crisp. An awesome beer.

Paulaner -Oktoberfest Bier, 5.8%, 500ml bottle.
Paulaner Brauerei, this is another Lager-Marzen Oktoberfest. Less head, more golden amber colour, sweeter smell. Taste is a bit more bitterness, some sweet malts. This is a lot like the Spaten, with slightly more malt, sweet malts mainly, and a little more hops bitterness, but also this has the mineral aspects of the above Augustiner. Its just good.

2 beers with 2 Halloween horror films

Molly Rose – Skyline IPA, 5.7% 375ml can.
This seems like a completely straight up West Coast IPA, smells like sweet fruity hops. Taste is a very straight up classic IPA hops as far as bitterness, very nice and crisp. I don’t really notice any specific malt character even on warming. Like a NEIPA but straight classic hops? Refreshing both as something that’s not too common and also as a pretty great very drinkable beer.

Molly Rose – Shoulders IPA, 7.2% 375ml can.
This is one step up in every way from the Skylight IPA. Stronger more pine resinous smell, a slightly darker colour. The taste is a deeper bitterness (Chinook, Cascade, Centennial, Galaxy). Its not cloying or sweet, beers of this style traditionally go large on the malt to try and “balance” the hop bitterness, and again there’s no real malt character, even when it warms up. A bit more of a sipper at 7.2% but very enjoyable.

Some beers with horror films

Dainton Brewing – Glazed & Confused, Jam Donut NEIPA. 7% 355ml can.
First hit is strawberry jam, then hoppy strawberry jam? Taste though is just very standard NEIPA with a hint of lactose sweetness, a hint of that jam in the taste. Its OK, I wish they would go large and full-on with these types of beers.

Pirate Life – Dilmah Tea & Biccies, Brown Ale. 5.6% 355ml can.
Smells like a lovely brown ale, nice malty smell. Nice colour, too. The mouthfeel is lighter than the average brown ale, a nice dark strong tea character is definitely present. A strong tea bitterness is there melded with the (New Zealand, unsure which) hops. There’s still some nice dark malt character in there though as well, especially as it warms. With the light carbonation this is very much like an alcoholic strong black tea. Which is kinda weird but nice. Refreshing, almost crisp, for a brown ale!

8 Wired – Flat White, Nitro Coffee Milk Stout. 5.5% 440ml can.
The is smells insanely like coffee., maybe some dark malt, but just heaps coffee. Nice dark colour, nice dense head like a tap beer. And its tastes like a slightly milky coffee. Smooth as hell, minimal carbonation, a slight sweetness, some very light vanilla, just a big coffee taste, dark malts accenting and pumping it up fantastically. If there is hops they are balanced amazingly with the light coffee bitterness.

Excellent Kolsch

Brauerei Früh am Dom – Früh Kölsch, 4.8% 500ml can.
Probably one of the best? In my eyes, yes. Its very damn good.
Clear awesome light amber to dark straw colour, great head, lots of spidery lacing. Its dry but light, crisp and fast, then a bit of malt and nice light bitter finish. Nice carbonation. Basic but thats what you want. A great beer.
