Local brewery made a Farmhouse ale? …it tastes pretty legit.
Bright Tank – Le’Myrtle Farmhouse ale, 7.5%ABV 375ml can. This actually tastes farmhouse, this seems def made with bugs, which is really fucking cool. Wish there was more info on how this was made. It has Lemon Myrtle I guess, also says it has Citra hops. The hopping for the end result is “balanced” enough at least. It definitely has a lemony taste, but the yeast/bugs is the big thing here as far as character, and as above, not enough info on that. Has a slight viscosity, maybe thats a brett/pedio thing? This is good, could go a little lower on the malt bill and lower on the ABV, bigger on the myrtle and create some breathing room for the yeast/bugs. Its good tho, and seriously happy a local is doing the farmhouse.
Muhak Good Day Soju, Cherry Flavour, 13.5%, 360ml bottle. Well, it contains Enzyme, so that’s gotta be good! Its…not actually bad. The “cherry” really takes the edge of the soju. Its still there, but its not too bad at all. A lot milder than any similar drink with vodka. A damn lot milder than the similar (shochu) 9% Suntory Strong Zero. Considering the ABV and its only 360ml its actually dangerously drinkable. Seems to be a lot of other flavors out there (and brands) so will def be trying more.
Not so great. Not bad, but a bit much. First melon patterned one was nice and like a Korean non-alcoholic cider. The bigger one was very melon, like rind and all in smell and taste, and a bit too much.
1) Klosterbrauerei Weissenohe – Weißenoher Eucharius Pils, 4.9% 500ml bottle. A decent German pils, bit light on the malts, some nice pils style bitterness and good carbonation. A little old (BB 21/04/21) and probably not kept well, but its good.
2) Bayreuther Bierbrauerei – Original Landbier Zwick’l, Kellerbier / Zwickelbier, 5.3%, 500ml bottle. Not much carbonation, it feels/tastes like a British session bitter. Kind of bready malts kind of biscuity in the aroma and taste, slightly medicinal but nice bitterness. I’m sure this isn’t at best quality but its not bad.
3) Rocky Ridge Brewing – Socks and Sandals ESB, 6%, 375ml can. This is a hop bomb, its definitely a lot of UK hops giving that earthy “soil” thing. Its good? Its a big IPA I guess. Smells like mangoes and soil. Makes me think it used a Kveik yeast really.
4) Slow Lane Brewing – Thirsty Miner, Grisette Pale Belgian Ale, 3.8% 375ml can This is OK, it does have hops, which I thought the point of a grisette was to not have hops. It also uses some amount of wheat, which I guess added to its light and drinkable character. No idea where the Belgian comes into it, maybe the yeast? Very drinkable at least.
5) Alesmith – 398 San Diego Style Pale Ale, 6%, 354ml can. Another pale ale. This is a lot more malty, lots of toasty and bready malts, nice mild bitterness. This is more toward a British pale ale. Nice.
6) Molly Rose Brewing – Resolved, Saison, 5.8%, 355ml can. This was lemony. probably the hops. A modern Saison, light beer with a citrus note. Not bad but wasn’t as great as previous beers I have had from them.
7) Boat Rocker – Dank & Bitter, IPA, 6.1% 375ml can. This could be a lot more dank, its definitely bitter. A nice IPA.
Finally got one of these after seeing them in photos, online and etc forever.
DETAILS (from Wikipedia): This drink is a chuhai, an alcoholic drink originating from Japan. The name chūhai is an abbreviation of “shōchū highball” . Traditional chūhai is made with shōchū and carbonated water flavored with lemon, though some modern commercial variants use vodka in place of shōchū. link
Strong Zero is made by freezing fruit in liquid nitrogen, hence the “-196˚” in the name, and then pulverizing it whole and soaking it in vodka. link
But what does it taste like? Suntory -196˚C Strong Zero Bitter Lemon, 9%, 375ml can. It tastes like lemon juice, pulp and rind and all, and vodka. Its not pulling any punches or laying off the alcohol taste. This is lemon and vodka with carbonated water, and that’s exactly what it tastes like. Actually NOT what I was expecting, despite the Wikipedia description and the overt 9%. Its real, its exactly what it says.
Still a combination of aged and young ale, and like the Alexander version this has cherries added. Far less sour than any of their other beers, I’d hesitate to call it a sour at all, this is lighter, more fruity (cherry obviously) but still has the elements of the Original and Grand Cru such as the oakyness and even wine notes. Nice.
Inland Market & Running with Thieves – Can of Beer Pilsner. This would be really good if it was far more carbonated. Hops come through too strong without it. I think this was canned in August
Deeds Brewing – Deeds Draught. Over a year old! Pretty flat, slightly metallic, stored poorly, not great! A lesson in always checking packaged/BB dates on cans!
Garage Project – Bliss Lager. from the BB this is about 6 months old. I have had this before and fresher. The difference isn’t much. A good beer.
Beer Farm – West Coast Lager. This is about 2 months old, and again I have had this before. Good standard Lager with non standard hops.
Innate Brewing – Pale As Bro Kiwi Hazy IPA. Not pictured. Kiwi would be referring the hops, but they aren’t listed by name. Canned October, so 2 months old. Very fruity, but low carbonation for some reason. Would be excellent with more carb, but holy hell, the fruit in these hops in this beer, is fantastic.
Rocky Ridge – Tropicale Tropical Beer. Its a hazy, named Tropical Beer as its style. 3.7%?. I wonder if they messed something up and just released it because it was good, like the Sour White Stout from way back in the day. Its good, its a hazy style beer.
Innate Brewing – Heirloom Czech Pilsner. Its nice, a bit too hoppy, and again I think this is non-standard hops but they work enough. Again lacking in carb. No date on this, but Its nice. Heirloom seems to be some series.
Black Hops – East Coast Low Hazy IPA. Had this a few times and its a great. Real nice hazy IPA.
Einsiedler Brauhaus – Bock Hell, 500ml bottle, 6.8%. Darker Amber, very clear, light tan/straw very fluffy and lasting thin head. Slightly sweet malts on the nose, lager yeast notes, some darker roast notes. Sweet malts muted by a nice bitterness, a hint of alcohol with herbal almost medicinal notes, some lager yeast elements. Smooth, mild carbonation.
Weltenburger Kloster – Pils, 4.9%, 500ml bottle. Klosterbrauerei Weltenburg, this is a German Pilsner, the smell is sweet and kind of wheat-beer-ish, lager yeast smells. Its very clear, light golden-straw in colour with a big head on pouring. This is quite bitter, and almost spicy, could be the yeast. Apart from that it is very easy drinking. Good, not great.
Hacker Pschorr – Kellerbier Naturtrub, 5.5%, 500ml bottle. A German Lager/Kellerbier/Zwickelbier, an unfiltered beer and it shows. Nice golden amber colour, quite cloudy, a nice head. Aroma is biscuit malts and lager yeast. Taste is very nice very biscuity malt, a mild bitterness balancing out a very mild sweetness. Well balanced, the malt character is very nice.
Hofbrau – Oktoberfestbier, 6.3%, 500ml bottle. Hofbräuhaus München. A Germen Lager/Marzen/Oktoberfestbier. Golden amber, very clear, nice head with good lacing. The smell is very lager yeast, not very funky though. Taste is bready and lightly sweet malts, theres a nice lager yeast character balanced with the mild hop bitterness, slightly spicy. Very good.
