Some beers with horror films

Dainton Brewing – Glazed & Confused, Jam Donut NEIPA. 7% 355ml can.
First hit is strawberry jam, then hoppy strawberry jam? Taste though is just very standard NEIPA with a hint of lactose sweetness, a hint of that jam in the taste. Its OK, I wish they would go large and full-on with these types of beers.

Pirate Life – Dilmah Tea & Biccies, Brown Ale. 5.6% 355ml can.
Smells like a lovely brown ale, nice malty smell. Nice colour, too. The mouthfeel is lighter than the average brown ale, a nice dark strong tea character is definitely present. A strong tea bitterness is there melded with the (New Zealand, unsure which) hops. There’s still some nice dark malt character in there though as well, especially as it warms. With the light carbonation this is very much like an alcoholic strong black tea. Which is kinda weird but nice. Refreshing, almost crisp, for a brown ale!

8 Wired – Flat White, Nitro Coffee Milk Stout. 5.5% 440ml can.
The is smells insanely like coffee., maybe some dark malt, but just heaps coffee. Nice dark colour, nice dense head like a tap beer. And its tastes like a slightly milky coffee. Smooth as hell, minimal carbonation, a slight sweetness, some very light vanilla, just a big coffee taste, dark malts accenting and pumping it up fantastically. If there is hops they are balanced amazingly with the light coffee bitterness.

#6 – Childs Play (1988)

Childs Play (1988) is the first film in the Childs Play franchise. The always under-rated Brad Dourif is in this. It begings with Dourif is being chased by a cop for some reason, he is shot in a toy store and he is a warlock? so he transfers his soul into a doll? in the process blowing the toy store up? Next day some street peddler has the now possessed toy and sells it to the mother character who gives it to her annoying child. The doll begins to act on its own, killing the baby sitter. The mother discovers there are no batteries in the doll and it is possessed. The mother tries to convince the police officer investigating the babysitter murder that the doll is “alive” and possessed by Dourif, who the officer believes he killed at the start of the film. The cop is attacked by Chucky and is then convinced its actually possessed by Dourif. The mother finds out Dourif was a voodoo practitioner. Chucky/Dourif visits his voodoo teacher who tells him the only way to escape the doll is to possess the child. Chucky kills his voodoo teacher in anger because he wont help him escape the doll and flees. The mother and cop both eventually track down Chucky who is attempting to switch souls the child, the cop is stabbed and a fight/chase ensues through their apartment. The child burns Chucky, the mother shoots the burned Chucky to pieces. Another cop arrives and is attacked by the Chucky remnants. The mother yells for the original cop to shoot Chucky in the heart, he does, and Chucky/Dourif is destroyed. Well, that’s what I watched, or you could read the Wikipedia article.

Its a fun, silly film. Its very much like a Twilight Zone episode but with 80’s horror elements. 3 stars

#7 Curse of Chucky (2013)

The 6th film in the Childs Play franchise. I’m not typing this one out as well.

A girl in a wheelchair and her mother are sent a Chucky doll for some reason. The mother “commits suicide” before the intro credits even roll… The film continues from there with a really convoluted story until it ends 90mins later. See HERE for the whole plot.

There were a few gross scenes and some scares. 1.5 stars.

#5 – The Relic

The Relic a 1997 horror film about a demonic creature that terrorises a museum killing people. A statue of a mythological creature is shipped to a museum by an anthropologist, and with it comes a bizarre creature. It kills a janitor and police detective Tom Sizemore investigates. More people die as the creature wreaks havoc and biologist Penelope Anne Miller tries to work out what it is… That’s the gist of it, the rest is an interesting monster horror film.

2.5 stars, its good.

#4 – Hellmaster (1992)

Hellmaster aka Soulstealer, is a 1992 horror film about a crazy college professor (John Saxon) who uses his students as guinea pigs turning them into crazed killers, according to Wikipedia. I had to watch this on a site called TubiTV because it wasn’t available for free anywhere else. LINK

Its exactly what it says on the box, its messed up, has some humour (intentional or not), some gore, a standard but confused slasher-fest with a few cool moments. It loses itself often. Hard to say if the writers even new or achieved what they were going for.

2 Stars, because weird and I didn’t hate it?

Halloween Horror Films Part 2 & 3

Two for one because I didn’t watch one yesterday…

#2 – Terrified (2017)

Terrified is a 2018 horror film from Argentina. A group of people experience poltergeist-like activity in their homes, weird things happen, a child comes back from the grave, paranormal investigators arrive, more weird things happen, a bizarre creature appears, and there’s an unresolved ending. Interesting rather enjoyable film. My subs were not the best, but it didn’t matter too much.

2.5 stars. Was enjoyable despite a language barrier.

#3 – Visions of Suffering (2006)

Visions of Suffering is a low budget Russian film from 2006. Its a lot of odd visuals, filters, effects, CGI, camera shaking and weird sound effects. Its also 2 hours long. I wasn’t sure what was going on, but according to Letterboxd:

A surreal world you may never wake from.
Demons cross the divide between the world of dreams and waking reality to capture a victim and drag him back to their nightmarish realm.

1.5 stars. It’s definitely weird, but it’s just too long and incoherent. The director/screenplay writer has some other films I will be checking out – if i can find them – because even with its problems it still was visually cool and definitely bizarre.

Watch 1 horror movie every day of October. Halloween!

Going to try and watch 1 horror movie each day in October. Will I achieve this? Probably not. Will also do a very short review and star rating.

#1 Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter

The Final Chapter! Part 4! of 12 movies! I know I have seen 1 and 2, pretty sure I haven’t seen 3, or 4, until now. Four is…well, not much happens at all. Very slow until the last 25mins or so. There’s no big scares, there’s some horror but not much, and it doesn’t add anything we don’t already know to the mythology. Stars Corey Feldman, and Tom Savini returns for make up but he never gets a chance to shine (except for the Jason “death” scene).

2 stars. Nothing really happens, but its watchable enough.

The Only Good Fascist Is A Very Dead Fascist

Propagandhi – The Only Good Fascist Is a Very Dead Fascist

Swastikas and Klan-robes. Sexist, racist, homophobes. Aryan-Nations and Hammerskins: you can wear my nuts on your nazi chins! God, I love a man in uniform! (But, uh, before we get too intimate here, big fella): what exactly are the great historical accomplishments of “your” race that make you proud to be white? Capitalism? Slavery? Genocide? Sitcoms? Guns? War? Pollution? Addiction? NAFTA? Thigh-Master? This is your fucking white-history, my “friend”. So why don’t we start making a history worth being proud of and stat fighting the real fucking enemy: the white male capitalist supemacist. Swastikas and Klan-robes. Sexist, racist, homophobes. This one’s for the “Master Race”: my brown-power ass in your white-power face! Kill them all and let a Norse God sort ’em out!

Built like a dream out of the past.
Crushing generations with a foggy mass
of seething anger and unhealed wounds.
I can’t make this right but don’t be confused.

I am a rifle. I am this blockade.
I’m banners and violence and car-bombs and riots.
I am a rifle. I am this blockade.
I am the fire of a thousand murdered sons.

Don’t look to me to give the future back.
Don’t look to me to rework the past.
I’m only here to bring things to a head.
You can cover your ears, it doesn’t change who I am.

I am a rifle. I am this blockade.
I’m banners and violence and car-bombs and riots.
I am a rifle. I am this blockade.
I am the fire of a thousand murdered sons.

I haunt the Chilcotin.
I stalk Palestine.
I fueled Rwanda’s worst.
I held Lasagna’s hand.
I’m one hundred shades of hunger.

I am a rifle. I am this blockade.
I am the fire of a thousand murdered sons.
I am resistance. I am your problem.
I’m not leaving and I am your fault.

Excellent Kolsch

Brauerei Früh am Dom – Früh Kölsch, 4.8% 500ml can.
Probably one of the best? In my eyes, yes. Its very damn good.
Clear awesome light amber to dark straw colour, great head, lots of spidery lacing. Its dry but light, crisp and fast, then a bit of malt and nice light bitter finish. Nice carbonation. Basic but thats what you want. A great beer.
